Separator History

  • The first separator solution, called the knockout vessel and dating back to the 1930s, was solely based on the principle of gravity. Later, around 1950, the concept of flow internals was introduced. Creating droplets improved both separation performance and the size of the demister vessel. Another 20 years later, gravitational force was supplemented by centrifugal force in cyclone separators.
  • Current conventional separators mostly use gravity separation, wire mesh or windpack internals. However, the separation effect is not ideal, resulting in a large amount of product entrained downstream in the form of droplets.

RotaSep®

  • Now, the state-of-the-art RotaSep® is the first separator solution that combines the benefits of both centrifugal separation and coalescence internals, including the robustness of traditional cyclones and separation efficiency that surpasses the best mesh or CDS separators.
  • The build material and internals of the RotaSep® have been carefully selected to withstand the harshest gas environments, resulting in robust and reliable solution.
  • Larger droplets are collected at the RotaSep® main housing walls, while high-volume droplet coalescence is achieved at the walls of numerous axial tubes in the rotating filter housing.

Technology benefits

  • Based on our proprietary separation technology, RotaSep® achieves a massive performance improvement when compared to traditional demister vessels and cyclones, separating particles up to 5 times smaller than traditional solutions.
  • Furthermore, the footprint and overall dimensions of the RotaSep® are up to 10 times smaller and up to 3 times lighter than other systems, making it fully compatible with both existing and new plants.
  • As RotaSep® does not use any consumables that need to be replaced or cleaned, it can be operated for years without any maintenance downtime, resulting in lower OPEX.
  • Thanks to our modular product approach, RotaSep® is available in 8 different sizes to suit any application needs, but at much lower CAPEX than other separators.

Development pipeline

  • RotaScrub ®
Where RotaSep® is our liquid-gas separator, RotaScrub ® will be our highly efficient solution for gas washing or scrubbing.
  • Based on the proprietary separation technology of the RotaSep®, RotaScrub ® adds a specific surface area up to 10 times higher than the next best solution and uses up to 30% less scrubbing liquid.
  • This results in RotaScrub ® being up to 10 times smaller than the conventional packed scrubber beds, making it the most compact, robust, and efficient scrubbing solutions on the market.
  • RotaScrub ® is set to be available in applications like product recovery yield improvement (e.g. methanol) and scrubbing tail gas emissions (e.g. CO2 emission capturing) in a wide range of industries.

Co-funded bij the European Union

SDS Separation has been awarded funding from the European Union's Just Transition Fund (JTF) for the development and roll-out of RotaScrub. The Just Transition Fund (JTF) is a cornerstone of the EU's European Green Deal, designed to aid regions severely impacted by the transition towards climate neutrality.

The local JTF Rijnmond Authority has three key objectives in the Groot-Rijnmond region of the Netherlands: enhance local Climate Tech companies, capture CO2 from local industries and create jobs in in the Rijnmond Area. Our company and RotaScrub are a great match with all these objectives.

Durability

  • Proven technology
Our proprietary separation technology has proven itself in various industrial applications, with RotaSep® units being fully operational for over 6 years - without maintenance.
  • Designed & built to last
SDS Separation’s products are designed to withstand even the harshest environments, and as we make use of the best available materials, they can be operated for years and years.
  • Standardized mechanical product design
Thanks to modular design principles at the core of our products, the tailored product performance, stability, and durability is a given – as the sum of the modules.

  • Highest quality components
Certain applications can call for specific requirements in terms of material or components used, which our team is happy to meet in cooperation with selected supply chain partners.
  • Accurate construction and machining
In order to make sure product quality and performance is always on par, the manufacturing process is quality controlled with high standards, such as 0,1 mm roundness tolerance levels.
  • Low maintenance, no consumables
Our products are ready for inline washing, without periodic maintenance requirements, filters or other replaceable consumables and are designed to be serviced on-site.
